Abu Dhabi Green Visa vs Golden Visa: Eligibility and Benefits Compared

Green and Golden residence serve different qualifying groups.

Green Residence and Golden Residence are both self-sponsored UAE residence options, but they have different qualifying routes and terms. Green Residence is described as a five-year permission; the current ICP Golden guide describes ten years. For an Abu Dhabi applicant, eligibility and evidence should come before a preference for the longer label.

Compare the route that fits your circumstances

The ICP Green Residence Guide focuses on skilled employees, independent professionals and business investors. The Golden Residency Guide covers public and real estate investors, entrepreneurs, senior skilled professionals, specialists, exceptional talent, outstanding students and other recognised categories.

The categories overlap in everyday language, but their tests differ. Someone described as a professional may qualify for Green employment residence without meeting Golden skilled-professional conditions. An artist or student may have a Golden route that does not resemble the Green employee route at all.

Do not interpret the programmes as two prices for the same product. The applicant must establish an approved basis; paying higher application or agency charges does not purchase a higher category.

Employees: different occupational and salary tests

For Green skilled employees, the published conditions include a valid UAE employment contract, MOHRE occupational level one to three, at least a bachelor's degree and monthly salary of at least AED 15,000 or equivalent.

For Golden skilled professionals, current guidance includes occupational level one or two, UAE work permission and approved employment, at least a bachelor's qualification or equivalent and monthly salary of at least AED 30,000. Professional licensing is required where relevant to the occupation.

These figures concern the particular employee routes. They should not be advertised as minimum salaries for every Green or Golden applicant. A research recommendation or qualifying investment involves different evidence, not an automatic exemption from an employee condition within the employee route.

Independent work and entrepreneurship

Green independent-work applicants need the specified MOHRE permission, accepted qualification and the prescribed earnings history or assessed solvency. The income route concerns annual independent earnings over the preceding two years of at least AED 360,000.

Golden entrepreneurship instead concerns an approved concept, an eligible SME meeting the published revenue condition, or a qualifying earlier venture sale. A successful freelance practice is not automatically a Golden entrepreneurial venture, and a company licence alone does not establish either category's full conditions.

A person who is both an independent professional and a founder should compare the legal arrangement and records. Personal earnings, business revenue and company valuation are distinct figures that cannot be substituted simply to reach the more attractive threshold.

Investor comparisons need precision

Green business-investor conditions concern a qualifying company contribution and approvals. The detailed ICP issuance service displays a contribution of at least AED 1 million for its investor condition, although the shorter Green overview omits the figure. Confirm the live selection before relying on it.

Golden investment routes have separate public-investment, tax and property requirements. AED 2 million is relevant to specified Golden deposit, capital and property routes, but the source-of-funds and financing rules differ between them.

Buying property is not automatically equivalent to making the Green business contribution. Nor does public-investment wording about non-borrowed capital automatically exclude property financing expressly addressed by the Golden property guidance.

Family eligibility and procedures should be checked separately. Both require applications and identity evidence rather than automatically granting residence to everyone accompanying the principal applicant. Green family residence cannot exceed the sponsor's validity under ICP's published family conditions.

Compare the actual household needs, including parents, children's ages, relationship documents and insurance. A programme-level benefit should not be treated as an issued permission for a specific relative.

Channels and transition planning

At the October 2026 review, ADRO's Green nomination channel is marked unavailable. Golden category pages also have some category-specific channel notices and alternatives. Check the live service rather than assuming both programmes can be initiated through the same local form.

If already resident, establish the approved transition before cancelling existing permission. Include dependants and work authorisation in the plan. Self-sponsorship can change who manages immigration administration without eliminating the need to maintain lawful status through the process.

Which should you assess first?

Start with the category your existing documents substantiate, then compare costs, maintenance obligations and household implications. Someone meeting Green employee conditions but not the Golden employee salary threshold should assess the available route without assuming a portfolio can replace missing salary evidence.

The Golden residence guide and Green residence guide explain the respective categories. Choose on verifiable eligibility and practical fit, while asking the authority to resolve any material uncertainty before paying for a proposed application.

Avoid assuming a later upgrade is automatic

A person who first obtains Green Residence may later become eligible for a Golden category, but the later application still needs its own current evidence and approval. Five years of residence is not itself a published substitute for a missing investment, qualifying occupation or recommendation. Plan around the permission actually held and treat a future category change as a separate possibility to assess when the facts support it.

For capital-based applications, the investor eligibility guidance separates ownership, source-of-funds and tax-evidence questions.
