Moving to Abu Dhabi From the United States

For a move from the United States, separate UAE relocation decisions from continuing US financial and administrative responsibilities.

For a move from the United States, separate UAE relocation decisions from continuing US financial and administrative responsibilities. Long-distance account access and document replacement are easier to arrange before departure.

Keep financial access reliable

Review bank authentication, card expiry dates and the availability of an international telephone option. Obtain appropriate advice about continuing US tax filing or account-reporting obligations. Do not treat residence abroad as proof that US responsibilities disappear. Keep records of moving reimbursements and employer benefits for your adviser.

Check documents before shipping

Ask the UAE receiving authority which qualification or civil document it accepts and what certification chain it requires. Keep originals and clear scans accessible. For medicines, check current UAE official import guidance before packing; a prescription alone should not be assumed to resolve every restriction.

Plan for practical differences

Check the electrical rating of appliances before paying to ship them. Compare replacement cost, shipping cost and warranty usefulness. Allow a temporary housing period to inspect neighbourhoods and the commute. If family members travel later, document the responsibilities and dates for school, insurance and residence applications separately.

Keep US reporting separate from UAE residence

The Internal Revenue Service explains that US citizens and resident aliens abroad generally remain subject to US filing rules based on worldwide income. Whether a particular return is required depends on the applicable criteria. Living in a country without a salary income tax does not by itself remove US reporting responsibilities. Obtain advice on your citizenship, residence and income facts before treating the new salary as fully available for spending.

Ask your adviser about any foreign account reporting relevant to accounts opened after arrival. Keep dates, account statements and employment benefit records in an organised file. Currency conversions used for reporting may need a consistent method, so retain the supporting exchange information rather than reconstructing a year of transactions from memory.

State tax treatment and continuing US property or business interests also need individual attention. Do not assume a federal tax answer settles a state question. Confirm how your investment provider treats overseas residence before changing an address, opening a new product or relying on unrestricted online access.

Review what should actually be shipped

Check each appliance's rating label for supported voltage and frequency. A plug adaptor changes the connection shape; it does not establish that the appliance can operate safely on a different supply. Dual voltage chargers may be straightforward, while a large appliance can require a more expensive solution. Ask the manufacturer when the label or manual is unclear.

A replacement calculation should include freight, customs handling, storage and installation, not just the item's original price. Ask whether its warranty and spare parts service apply in the UAE. Measure the destination home and its access routes before shipping large furniture. A favourite sofa may fit the room but not the lift or staircase.

Keep laptops, document originals and essential medicines out of the freight consignment. Record serial numbers and condition photographs for valuable shipped equipment. Make the insurance declaration match the inventory, including any items you pack yourself, since coverage conditions may differ.

Prepare records that are difficult to replace remotely

Ask the receiving UAE authority which version of a birth certificate, marriage record or qualification it accepts. Confirm the required authentication and translation route for the document's issuing jurisdiction. Avoid ordering an apostille or other certification simply because it worked for a different destination. The intended UAE process determines what is useful.

For a profession requiring local licensing, ask the relevant regulator what credential verification, examination or experience records are needed. Employer recruitment approval does not necessarily mean professional permission is complete. Obtain references and access to university records while familiar administrative contacts are still easy to reach.

Adjust the first weeks for distance and time zones

An issue with a US account or property can require contact during Abu Dhabi evening hours. Keep a secure list of providers, opening hours and an authorised backup person where appropriate. Check that account authentication will function without your old domestic telephone plan. Do not send login credentials to a helper as a workaround.

Arrange temporary housing long enough to inspect the work commute and review a proposed lease. Discuss health insurance start dates and ongoing care before departure, including every dependant. If you enter on a visitor permission before a later change of status, confirm the actual authorised process and do not begin work without the required permission. The document preparation guide explains how to organise the receiving authority's instructions without overcollecting sensitive records.

Check the route and timing for renewing passports and replacing civil records while abroad. Note which US office issued each document and retain the official request details. If an authorised person may need to act for you, obtain appropriate advice on the scope and acceptance of that authority. A general handwritten permission should not be assumed to cover banking, property or official document transactions.

For any flight connecting through another country, check that traveller, baggage and medicine arrangements work for the entire route. A lawful UAE destination does not answer a transit country's requirements. Keep airline and authority instructions with the itinerary and allow time for questions before travelling with a document or medicine whose status is uncertain.
