A UAE police clearance or clear criminal record certificate is requested through the appropriate official police service. Confirm the issuing channel, intended recipient, language and any foreign-use attestation before applying.

Establish why the certificate is needed

An employer, licensing authority or overseas immigration process may request a certificate. Ask what it must demonstrate, how recently it must have been issued and whether it must be addressed to a named organisation. The recipient's acceptance conditions matter as much as the certificate's general description.

Do not confuse a criminal-record certificate with a traffic clearance, court-case enquiry or a guarantee about every possible legal restriction. These are distinct services. If the request is ambiguous, ask the recipient to identify the exact certificate rather than choosing the first clearance option you find.

Choose an official issuing route

For an Abu Dhabi-related application, begin with the Ministry of Interior's official service information or the relevant Abu Dhabi Police guidance. The MoI publishes a user guide for its Clear Criminal Record Certificate service. Follow the current website or app journey for your circumstances.

The fact that another emirate offers a similar certificate does not establish that its applicant categories or procedures apply identically. Use the issuing authority appropriate to your record and purpose. Avoid commercial websites that imply they are the only way to obtain an official result.

Prepare identity and application details

Have your current passport and relevant identity information available. Check the name, date of birth, contact information and any historical UAE residence details requested by the service. If an old passport or identity number differs from your current document, provide the genuine history rather than attempting to hide the discrepancy.

Read the live checklist before uploading documents. Identity verification may draw on existing records, and the authority can request further information. Keep the request specific to the certificate application rather than sending an unrestricted folder containing unrelated family, bank and employment records.

Applicants outside the UAE need a tailored check

Former residents abroad should check the issuing channel's current requirements for their circumstances. Fingerprint evidence may be needed, particularly where suitable biometric records cannot be matched. The authentication and submission requirements must come from the actual issuing authority and relevant mission instructions.

Do not assume every applicant must obtain a new physical fingerprint card, or that every former Emirates ID holder can avoid one. A service can request additional checks after submission. Plan time for those checks and ask about the correct evidence before paying a foreign intermediary to prepare it.

Select language, recipient and purpose accurately

Where the service offers choices, ensure the language matches the recipient's instructions. Check any named organisation and the purpose selected before payment. A certificate for the wrong recipient can cause a delay even when your identity details are correct.

If the requested organisation is not listed or the form does not fit your situation, use official support. Selecting an unrelated company as a workaround can put inaccurate information on the application. Explain the exact mismatch and ask which approved option applies.

Understand foreign-use attestation

MoFA and MoI provide an integrated digital attestation route for the Clear Criminal Record Certificate issued by MoI. MoFA describes certificate and attestation requests and associated payment through MoI's digital channels. Check the offered process when the certificate is intended for use abroad.

This integration does not establish that every destination accepts the certificate without another requirement. The overseas recipient may specify a language, age of document or further legalisation. Confirm those conditions first, and retain the digitally issued original and verification details instead of only a printed image.

Track requests and respond to follow-up

Save the application reference, payment evidence and messages from the authority. A submitted request is not the same as an issued certificate. If you are asked to attend or provide more information, follow the instruction through the official channel and establish what needs to be brought.

Avoid assuming a pending application means an adverse finding. There can be identity, record-matching or completeness questions that require review. Equally, do not ignore an official follow-up because an agent promised instant issuance. The issuing authority determines whether its checks are complete.

Verify and share the finished certificate

Inspect the issued document for correct personal details, recipient information and language. Use any official verification facility identified on the certificate or issuing platform. Send the original digital file through the recipient's approved channel when that is what they require.

Keep distribution limited because a police certificate contains sensitive personal information. If the recipient rejects it, obtain the reason before reapplying: wrong issuing authority, outdated document, incorrect language, missing attestation or an identity inconsistency require different solutions. Store the accepted version and supporting correspondence securely so the record remains useful without being exposed unnecessarily.

Where your circumstances have changed since a previous application, do not assume you can reuse the old certificate. A new passport, a different named recipient or a destination's recency condition can require a fresh request or clarification. Keep the previous reference available as history while asking what the current transaction needs.
