A job offer sets out a proposed employment arrangement, while the employment contract records the terms under which the relationship is established. Both deserve careful review. In Abu Dhabi, compare the offer, contract and applicable official process so that an attractive recruitment discussion does not turn into a materially different agreement.
Start with the identity of the employer
Check the full legal entity on both documents. A brand name, group company and employing subsidiary are not necessarily interchangeable. If a recruitment agency issues the initial communication, establish whether it is acting for an employer or will itself employ you for an assignment.
Verify a suspicious offer through an independently obtained employer contact and the relevant official route. The UAE Government's employment and fraud guidance describes checks for job offers and company existence. A letterhead, stamp or signature copied into a document does not, by itself, prove either the sender's authority or the role's legitimacy.
Identify what the offer actually promises
An offer may contain conditions such as references, qualification checks or professional approval. Read those conditions before resigning or relocating. Ask which conditions remain outstanding, who decides whether they are satisfied and when the proposed joining date becomes reliable.
Distinguish a salary discussion from an offer capable of review. An email saying that compensation is approximately a certain amount leaves important questions unanswered. Request the basic salary, allowances, variable pay and benefits in a form you can compare with the proposed contract. Keep the date and version of each document.
Compare duties and location
Match the role title, principal duties and reporting line across the documents. A small difference in title may be harmless, while a major shift from an office role to rotating site work can change the whole decision. Ask for an explanation rather than assuming that the recruitment description still controls every practical detail.
Check the normal workplace, travel requirements and working pattern. If a hybrid arrangement or particular location influenced your acceptance, make sure the final documents support it. Do not count on a verbal promise to overcome a broad or conflicting written provision without obtaining clarification.
Reconcile pay line by line
Use a simple comparison showing the offer amount, contract amount and any policy defining the benefit. Separate basic pay from total cash and non-cash benefits. A reimbursement limit should not be compared directly with a monthly cash allowance. Likewise, a possible bonus is not equivalent to a guaranteed payment.
Ask about eligibility, payment dates and any conditions attached to housing, flights, education or insurance. If the offer mentions family benefits but the policy covers only the employee, identify the gap before signing. The salary-components guide explains why the split can affect more than monthly budgeting.
Review the terms that appear later
The contract may introduce probation, notice, confidentiality, repayment or restrictive provisions that were not described in the initial offer. Read them in full. Ask for incorporated policies and attachments, including the versions that would apply when you join.
A request for explanation is particularly important where a clause could affect future work or create a financial obligation. Do not assume that a later document is merely administrative. If an important term is disputed or difficult to interpret, obtain appropriate advice before agreeing rather than relying solely on the recruiter's summary.
Understand the official employment process
MoHRE administers the relevant federal private-sector process. Its official guidance explains the connection between the approved offer and employment contract, including the safeguards surrounding changes to agreed terms. ADGM and government employment have their own systems, so identify the correct authority before assuming a particular verification service applies.
Do not treat an offer letter as authorisation to start duties. Ask which employment approvals are needed and what evidence you should retain. A valid residence status and an accepted offer do not automatically establish permission to work for the named employer. Keep the distinction clear when discussing an urgent joining date.
Resolve discrepancies in writing
Send a concise list of material differences rather than a general statement that the documents look wrong. Quote the relevant heading, explain the discrepancy and ask for the corrected version. For example, an allowance may have disappeared, a location may have changed or a benefit may now be subject to an unseen policy.
Review the replacement document completely. A corrected salary page does not prove that every other clause is unchanged. Keep the earlier version for your records, but avoid circulating sensitive contract copies unnecessarily. Sign only the version you understand and intend to accept.
Keep evidence after acceptance
Save the signed offer, contract, amendments and key explanations together. Keep official references separately from informal recruiter messages so you can find the relevant evidence. If onboarding introduces another entity or a different package, ask how it relates to the agreement already accepted.
If the employer proposes a material change after you have made commitments, seek timely clarification and appropriate advice. The effect of any document depends on its wording, the facts and the applicable regime. The practical goal is consistency: the employer, job and package you verified should match the employment relationship you actually enter.
