Self-Employment Requirements for Expatriates in Abu Dhabi

Self-employment requirements in Abu Dhabi depend on the activity, legal form and residence arrangement you choose.

Self-employment requirements in Abu Dhabi depend on the activity, legal form and residence arrangement you choose. An expatriate should establish a lawful basis for the actual service, satisfy any professional approvals and maintain valid immigration status. Banking, tax and health insurance then need to fit the same facts.

Treat the setup as a sequence of linked decisions. Paying for a licence without checking the intended residence route, or applying for a bank account before you can explain the activity, can leave a business unable to operate as planned.

Write a short activity statement that explains who buys your work and what you deliver. Include whether the work is performed online, at a customer's premises or in a specialised facility. Explain any selling of goods, handling of funds or regulated advice separately.

Choose a legal form that is actually available for the approved activity. A sole proprietorship and an incorporated company should not be treated as interchangeable names for a small business. They can have different implications for contracts, liability and tax assessment.

ADRA's Freelancer Licence information identifies a sole-proprietor route. If you need another legal form, ask the economic authority which service applies rather than assuming the freelancer application can be adapted to every business model.

Confirm the approvals before collecting documents

Ask the issuing authority for the activity-specific checklist. It may require professional qualifications, relevant experience or consent documentation. Where another regulator must approve the work, establish whether that approval comes before the licence or is a condition of practising afterwards.

Do not assume an academic degree alone authorises a regulated service. The right to use a professional title, sign technical work or advise on protected activities may require a separate assessment. Keep those questions visible in the plan.

Create a document table naming the recipient, purpose and requested format. This prevents paying for unnecessary translations or attestation and helps you spot a missing record before submitting an otherwise complete application.

Establish your basis to reside and work

Check the current residence category and its expiry date. If you are employed, identify the applicable contract restrictions and approval process for outside work. If family-sponsored, confirm the work and economic permissions needed while that residence continues.

A planned application for a different category is not the same as an issued permit. Green Residence, for example, has route-specific qualifying evidence. Review the residence comparison before cancelling an existing arrangement.

Ask which steps involve ICP, MoHRE, the economic authority or a specialised free-zone issuer. Record the order and the point at which work can begin. This is especially important when the business launch and a household relocation happen together.

Set up commercial documents and payment access

Prepare a service agreement and invoice format using the correct legal supplier name. Specify the service, price, currency, due date and customer details. Include tax information only as appropriate to your actual registration and transaction.

Talk to the bank about the proposed legal form, countries of operation and expected receipts. Provide genuine evidence of the business rather than fabricating customer history. Ask what can be used if the business is newly established and has no trading statements yet.

For overseas customers, decide how transfer fees and currency conversion will be handled. A contract priced in one currency and an account receiving another can create avoidable disagreement if neither party has considered the final amount received.

Assess corporate tax and VAT separately

The Federal Tax Authority's published natural-person rules use business turnover exceeding AED 1 million in a calendar year to identify the relevant corporate-tax scope, subject to the stated conditions. The test should not be confused with a personal salary or a profit calculation.

A company has a different starting point, so an incorporated business should not simply copy the natural-person threshold. Ask a qualified adviser to assess the legal form and activity. Foreign customers and free-zone registration are not automatic reasons to ignore the question.

VAT has its own registration thresholds and periods. Track taxable supplies and imports from the outset, using FTA guidance for classification. A service supplied to someone abroad may need analysis rather than being removed from the records because payment came from another country.

Maintain a workable operating file

Keep current licences, residence evidence, client agreements, invoices, payment records and insurance in an organised system. Record renewal dates independently, since a longer residence validity does not necessarily extend a shorter business licence.

Review health cover when leaving employment and when sponsoring family. Ask the insurer to confirm the actual resident arrangement and policy commencement. Do not assume a previous employer's coverage remains active merely because the insurance card still appears in an app.

Before accepting another type of service or hiring help, compare the new facts with the existing approvals. Self-employment requirements continue after launch. A periodic review should confirm that the permissions, bank profile and accounts still describe the business you are now running.
