Green Residence for investors and business partners concerns a qualifying contribution to a UAE business, together with the necessary approvals and evidence. A trade licence or a minority shareholding alone should not be treated as a promise of a five-year residence. Abu Dhabi applicants need to check the detailed service conditions as well as the short programme overview.
What the current official pages say
The ICP Green Residence Guide describes proof of investment or contribution to a business venture and relevant licences and approvals. Its overview does not quote a minimum amount.
The detailed ICP residence issuance service, however, states that the investor's contribution to a company must be at least AED 1 million in cash or the foreign-currency equivalent. It discusses contributions when establishing a company or joining an existing one. For contributions made through assets rather than cash, it refers to valuation by the Ministry of Economy.
These pages serve different purposes. The absence of a figure in the overview does not cancel a condition shown in the issuance service. Before committing capital, ask ICP to confirm the live Green investor selection and how that condition applies to your proposed investment.
Contribution, capital and company value
Your contribution is not necessarily the same as the total company's capital or an estimated market valuation. A firm may be described as worth AED 5 million while a particular shareholder owns only a small interest. The investor should be able to show the amount and nature of their own qualifying stake.
Likewise, a promise to invest later is different from an established contribution. Record whether funds have been paid, shares have been registered and any conditions remain outstanding. If the structure includes several investors, separate each person's ownership and contribution instead of presenting one combined company figure for every application.
For non-cash investments, a private estimate of intellectual property, equipment or goodwill is not automatically the required official valuation. Ask which documents and valuation process are accepted before assuming an asset satisfies the threshold.
Business documents that tell a consistent story
The ICP service lists a trade licence and partnership or investment agreement for the investor category, together with identity documents. Those records should align on the company's legal name, licence details, ownership structure and applicant identity.
A sensible supporting file may also include the evidence requested to substantiate the contribution. Keep original payment records and official ownership records available. Do not substitute a promotional pitch deck for formal evidence of an investment that has actually taken place.
If the company recently changed partners, ensure the documents show the current arrangement. A licence issued before a transfer may not explain who owns the interest today. Obtain the properly updated records instead of expecting the residence reviewer to infer a completed transaction from email correspondence.
Approval to invest and permission to operate
Residence does not replace the company's economic licence, sector approvals or permission to perform regulated work. The company may need authority to carry out its activity even when the investor does not personally work as a regulated professional.
Separate the questions in your planning: may this company conduct the proposed activity, does the applicant own a qualifying investment, and can residence be issued under the selected route? Treating these as one package can hide missing approvals or produce an inaccurate cost estimate.
Continuing obligations and renewal
The detailed ICP service says an investor must continue meeting the conditions to maintain and renew residence, and must notify the issuing authority if those conditions cease to be met. Therefore, selling shares, reducing the contribution or closing the company should trigger a review of residence implications.
A five-year validity period does not mean the investment can immediately be withdrawn without consequence. Before restructuring, ask what notification or change-of-category process applies. Retain the evidence used at issuance so the effect of a proposed transaction can be compared against the original basis.
Compare the correct alternatives
The Green residence guide explains this five-year option alongside the employee and independent-work routes. Golden Residence for public investment and property investment has different conditions. A property purchase should not be described as automatically meeting a Green business-partner contribution.
Someone who is both employed and a shareholder should compare the evidence for each route rather than assuming the investor route is always easier. The relevant facts include employment classification, qualifying pay, the investment structure and future plans for the business.
Before signing or paying
Obtain confirmation of the current category, required contribution, acceptable valuation and documentary list. Then request an itemised estimate separating business formation costs from residence charges. A residence service provider's fee is not capital invested in the company, and neither payment guarantees the authority's approval.
Legal form and more than one licence
The ICP Services Guide 2024, in its Green investor sections on printed pages 109 and 114, says the company must not be a sole proprietorship. It also describes considering total invested capital where the applicant is a partner across more than one licence. Treat these as dated detailed official guidance to confirm against the live service, not a guarantee that any group of licences qualifies. Ask how the proposed legal form and aggregation are assessed before incorporating or buying additional interests.
