Abu Dhabi Green Visa Requirements for Freelancers

For a freelancer, Green residence planning begins with the accepted work permit and evidence of the freelance activity.

Independent educational information. This publication does not provide immigration applications or individual legal advice. Confirm requirements with the responsible authority before acting.

Freelancers can qualify for Green Residence through the independent-work route when they meet the relevant permit, qualification and financial conditions. Taking freelance projects, receiving overseas payments or opening a bank account does not by itself create eligibility. Abu Dhabi applicants should distinguish permission to practise an activity from the residence permission that allows them to stay.

The permit is the starting point

The ICP Green Residence Guide identifies a freelance or self-employment permit issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. ADRO's freelancer requirements also name a MOHRE freelance work permit.

A commercial package sold as a freelance visa may combine several services, but the marketing label does not establish that it supplies the permit required for Green Residence. Ask the provider to name the issuing authority, permit type and proposed residence category separately.

This is particularly important where a free-zone licence, overseas business registration or remote-work arrangement is involved. Such documents may have a legitimate purpose without automatically satisfying the MOHRE permit condition of this route. Obtain an answer about your actual document rather than a general assurance about freelancers.

Qualifications and the work you perform

The published minimum is a bachelor's degree, specialised diploma or equivalent. Prepare the qualification that supports the application, together with any attestation or recognition requested by the service. Short online course certificates should not be assumed to meet the standard for a specialised diploma.

Where your award and current activity differ, describe both accurately. An applicant trained in design may now provide independent research services, for example. The authority decides whether the qualifications and permit support the selected activity. Changing the description of the work merely to resemble the award can create more questions than it resolves.

Earnings over the previous two years

The income condition concerns annual freelance earnings during the preceding two years of at least AED 360,000 or the foreign-currency equivalent. ADRO also identifies proof of financial solvency during residence as an alternative. It does not publish one universal savings balance that automatically secures approval.

Build the earnings evidence by period. Match client contracts and invoices to payments actually received, retaining currency and date details. A payment processor payout can cover several invoices, while a bank deposit might include personal transfers. A short reconciliation makes those differences intelligible without presenting every deposit as freelance income.

Do not combine two low-income years into a total and describe that as satisfying an annual threshold. Equally, a strong month multiplied by twelve is a forecast, not evidence of the prescribed historical income. Ask how the relevant two-year periods should be documented where your accounting year differs from the calendar year.

Demonstrating financial solvency

If relying on solvency, seek the current accepted evidence before arranging investments or transferring money. The authority may need to understand ownership, accessibility and sustainability of the resources, but this guide does not invent an official formula or list of acceptable asset classes.

A sensible question is whether a particular asset can support living costs throughout the residence term. A property valuation and readily available funds describe different situations. Present the facts transparently and let the authority confirm which records it requires.

Separate client work from residence processing

An application receipt is not permission to start any activity that otherwise requires authorisation. Check the validity and scope of your current work permit while the residence case is being processed. If your clients are abroad, describe that fact accurately rather than assuming foreign clients remove UAE licensing considerations.

Independent work also involves business administration that the residence application does not settle. Contracts, invoicing, professional obligations and any relevant tax requirements should be considered through their own authorities. Green Residence is not a tax ruling or a guarantee that a client relationship will be treated as self-employment.

An illustrative evidence file

A freelance translator might organise a folder containing their permit, accepted qualification, two annual income schedules and the bank or payment records supporting those schedules. Where a platform deducts fees before payout, the schedule could explain the difference between invoiced receipts and amounts deposited.

That example is a filing method, not an official minimum document list. The live application determines the required uploads. Avoid placing unrelated customer identities or unnecessary private contract details in a document bundle unless requested.

Before paying for an application package

Confirm whether the service covers permit issuance, residence submission, Emirates ID and any required medical or insurance steps. ADRO currently notes a limitation on Green nomination availability through its office, so verify the live federal channel before purchasing assistance.

Use the Green residence overview to compare the freelancer route with employee or investor residence. Select the category your existing records support, and resolve any uncertainty about the permit or financial route before treating a five-year residence as part of a confirmed relocation plan.

Keep platform statements intelligible

Where several clients pay through one marketplace, a single bank payout may not identify the underlying work. Retain the platform statement linking the payout to completed services and any deductions. If the platform account uses a trading name, explain its connection to the applicant. This avoids counting the payout and each underlying invoice as two separate receipts. A short index is a practical aid, but it should preserve the original records and should not disguise cancelled work, refunded amounts or funds belonging to someone else.
