Abu Dhabi Green Visa Requirements for Self-Employed Professionals

A self-employed professional should check both Green residence eligibility and the permissions needed to conduct the underlying activity.

Independent educational information. This publication does not provide immigration applications or individual legal advice. Confirm requirements with the responsible authority before acting.

Self-employed professionals use the independent-work Green Residence route rather than a separate immigration category available to anyone who owns a business. For an Abu Dhabi application, the essential questions are whether you hold the required MOHRE permission, have the accepted qualification and can demonstrate the prescribed earnings history or financial solvency.

Self-employment and company ownership are different

A professional can work independently without holding shares in a large company. A shareholder can own a business without personally providing freelance services. These arrangements should not be confused when selecting the residence category.

Consider an independent software consultant who bills several clients directly. The relevant evidence concerns their permitted independent activity and earnings. By contrast, a partner investing capital in a UAE consulting company may need the investor route and company contribution evidence. The profession's name does not decide between them.

The Green residence overview connects these options. Establish which legal arrangement actually describes your work before collecting documents, because the wrong category can make a substantial file irrelevant to the test being assessed.

The independent-work conditions

The ICP Green Residence Guide requires a MOHRE freelance or self-employment permit. It identifies a bachelor's degree, specialised diploma or equivalent as the education minimum. Its financial criteria concern independent-work income during the preceding two years and financial solvency for the residence period.

ADRO's freelancer page explains the published income threshold as annual earnings of at least AED 360,000 for the previous two years, with solvency offered as an alternative. Do not treat this as an AED 360,000 combined two-year total or as a monthly salary threshold.

Nor should business turnover automatically be described as personal self-employment earnings. A company's revenue, its profit and money available to an individual partner can be different amounts. Ask how your particular legal structure should be evidenced if income passes through a company account.

Review the authority behind your permission

Professional licences, economic activity licences and residence permissions answer different questions. A licence may authorise a business activity while a MOHRE permit supports this particular Green category. If your existing permission comes from a free zone or another regulator, obtain confirmation about its acceptance rather than assuming all licences are interchangeable.

Ask for the exact permit description on the application, not just a salesperson's reference to self-employment. If the answer involves a new permission, establish its prerequisites, scope and separate cost. Residence planning should follow a lawful operating arrangement, rather than using a residence application to regularise activity retrospectively.

Prepare a coherent financial history

Create a schedule for each relevant year showing the nature of the services, invoice dates, amounts, currencies and receipts. Keep the underlying contracts and account statements available. Where payments were made to a platform before being transferred to you, explain how the platform record connects to the bank entry.

Exclude personal savings transfers from a schedule labelled earned income. Explain refunds or reversals rather than counting the original invoice while ignoring its cancellation. These steps are practical recordkeeping suggestions, not a replacement for whatever certified statements the authority requests.

A professional with only a recent high-value contract should recognise the difference between forward-looking financial prospects and the required historical record. A signed future engagement may be relevant context, but it cannot turn projected revenue into two completed years of earnings.

When using the solvency alternative

The official pages do not publish a single savings threshold suitable for every applicant. Ask which resources, ownership documents and time horizon the authority will consider. Avoid private claims that a particular bank balance guarantees a five-year permission unless the official service confirms that rule.

Keep the explanation of your resources separate from the earnings schedule. Otherwise a bank balance may be counted twice: once as money accumulated from prior work and again as supposed new income. The aim is a transparent financial picture, not the largest possible headline figure.

Abu Dhabi application planning

At the October 2026 review, ADRO's Green pages say nomination requests through that office are unavailable. Check ICP's current submission route and ask how your present status affects the application. Someone already resident and someone entering to complete residence procedures may need different preliminary steps.

If you have dependants, business travel or a contract renewal approaching, map those dates before changing status. Self-sponsored residence does not eliminate the need to manage lawful stay during an application. Keep your current permission's conditions distinct from the proposed Green permission.

A useful decision checkpoint

Proceed when you can name the qualifying permit, identify the qualification and explain the chosen financial route with records. If one of those foundations is missing, resolve it before paying for document preparation. A well-organised application cannot compensate for a category that does not fit the underlying professional arrangement.

Mixed work needs a clear description

Some professionals are employed part time while also providing independent services. Separate employment pay from independent receipts in the evidence rather than labelling both streams freelance income. Identify the permission supporting each activity and ask which route can assess the actual arrangement. A combined total may describe household resources while failing to prove either category's specific condition. If an engagement changes from a client contract to employment, keep the transition date and records so earnings from different arrangements remain understandable during the review.

If the actual basis is a company contribution, compare the business-partner requirements before selecting independent professional work.
