Foreign driving licence conversion in Abu Dhabi is an exchange route available only when the current eligibility conditions are met. Check the issuing country, licence category and applicant requirements through Abu Dhabi Mobility's TAMM service before paying for documents or surrendering an original licence.
Confirm that exchange is the correct service
Abu Dhabi Mobility lists exchange services for GCC and designated-country driving licences. The existence of an exchange arrangement does not establish that every document from that country or every holder qualifies. A learner permit, expired card or restricted category may need different treatment from a full current licence.
Prepare the issuing country, issue and expiry dates, vehicle categories and the name shown on the document. Explain whether you are now resident in Abu Dhabi and whether you already hold a UAE traffic file. This gives the authority the facts needed to direct you to an exchange application or the appropriate alternative training route.
Use current recognition information
Country arrangements can change, and third-party lists can omit nationality or documentary conditions. The UAE Government's Markhoos information describes recognition and exchange arrangements, but your Abu Dhabi application still needs to satisfy the live service. Do not infer that a visitor's permission to drive automatically guarantees resident exchange.
If two official summaries appear different, ask the licensing service to apply the rule to your precise circumstances. Keep the response and case reference. Avoid using a travel agent's verbal assurance as the basis for buying a car or committing to a job requiring immediate driving. Resident driving requirements explains the wider eligibility checks.
Check personal details before collecting evidence
Compare the licence with your passport and Emirates ID. Differences in spelling, name order or date of birth should be explained or corrected through the appropriate authority. Do not alter a scan to make the documents appear consistent. An accurate explanation with accepted supporting evidence is safer than an edited image.
Ask whether the original licence is required, whether it will be retained and whether additional verification is necessary. If your issuing authority offers an official driving record or verification service, check whether Abu Dhabi accepts that evidence before ordering it. Paying for an overseas certificate does not guarantee that it is relevant to this transaction.
Establish translation and eyesight requirements
Ask what language and format are accepted for your specific licence. A translation should preserve the licence's meaning and categories; it should not convert an ambiguous entitlement into a broader one. Where a certified translation is required, use an accepted provider rather than a friend or an automatic translation tool.
Complete any required eyesight examination through an approved channel. Confirm how the result is attached to your traffic record and whether further medical evidence is necessary in your case. A successful eye test is not an exchange approval. It is one item within a process that also checks the licence, identity and category conditions.
Complete the official application carefully
Access TAMM from an official route and authenticate with your own UAE Pass. Review the selected service, personal details and document requirements before submission. Keep your identity credentials private even when an authorised representative helps with paperwork. Assistance does not justify handing over unrestricted access to your account.
Review the displayed fees and conditions at the time of application. Separate the government transaction from translation, examination and delivery costs. Save the receipt and application reference, and track requests for additional information through the official account. Do not submit a second application simply because a first one is taking longer than expected.
Inspect the issued entitlement
After approval, check the UAE licence category, expiry and restrictions. Do not assume every category on the foreign licence has transferred. A motorcycle or heavy-vehicle entitlement may require its own decision even when a car category is accepted. Ask the authority to correct any apparent error before driving that type of vehicle.
Clarify the status of the original licence and retain evidence of any surrender or exchange. If you will drive abroad later, check what the destination recognises and whether you need a separate international permit. The purpose of exchange is a UAE entitlement; it is not a universal guarantee of recognition in every other country.
If exchange is not available
Request the appropriate route for your experience and vehicle class. That may involve opening or updating a traffic file, approved instruction and assessments. An advertised fast-track package should not be interpreted as a guarantee of passing or a right to skip an authority requirement.
Compare providers using a written breakdown of required stages and possible additional lessons. Make transport arrangements for the period before issuance. It is better to plan for a realistic process than to continue using a foreign licence after the authority has told you a resident UAE entitlement is required.
Prepare for driving after conversion
Exchange confirms recognition of an entitlement, not familiarity with Abu Dhabi's roads. Read the local signs, parking rules and accident-reporting process. Plan a short familiarisation journey before a demanding commute or motorway drive, especially if traffic direction or lane arrangements differ from your previous experience.
Check the vehicle's registration and insurer's permitted-driver terms separately. The licence conversion does not update an insurance policy or establish cover for commercial use. Keep the official approval records and a renewal reminder. Information was last verified on 20 October 2026; the live Abu Dhabi service determines current exchange eligibility.
