Apply to ICP for a replacement when your Emirates ID is lost or damaged. Report the problem promptly, protect affected accounts and keep the replacement application separate from any residence-renewal question.
Report the loss through the right authority
Emirates ID is administered federally by ICP, including for Abu Dhabi residents. ICP's published holder duties say to report a lost card within seven days and to notify the relevant identity service point within seven days when damage makes it unusable. Do not wait for a bank or employer to request the missing card before acting.
If theft or another crime is involved, consider the appropriate police report as well. A police report and an identity replacement are different processes. Ask ICP what evidence is required in your circumstances instead of assuming one report automatically creates the other application.
Decide whether the card is damaged or defective
A cracked card and a card that suddenly stops reading may require different handling. ICP's FAQ directs holders of a non-working card to an identity service centre for examination. It distinguishes a manufacturing defect from damage caused by misuse.
Keep the faulty card rather than destroying it. Record what happened and whether the problem concerns physical damage, the chip, or recognition by a particular reader. One failed transaction does not establish that the card itself is defective; a service provider may need to investigate its equipment or record first.
Prepare the replacement request
Start from the official ICP website or app and select the replacement service, not first issuance. The service card identifies documents such as a passport and photograph, with requirements varying by applicant category. Follow the live checklist rather than a commercial agency's generic list.
Check that the passport details, contact information and delivery arrangements are accurate before submission. A replacement sent to an old address creates a second problem. If someone applies for a dependent or as a representative, confirm that the service permits that relationship and requires no further authorisation.
Understand what replacement does not change
ICP states that the new card carries the same validity period as the lost or damaged original. Replacement is not a new period of residence and does not automatically extend an approaching expiry date. If you also need renewal, ask ICP how the transactions should be coordinated.
The physical loss of a card also does not by itself prove that your underlying identity number has changed. Use the official application record to identify the transaction. Avoid creating new accounts under altered personal details merely because you cannot find the old card.
Review fees and urgent-service conditions
The replacement service publishes separate fee components and describes an urgent route through an authority service centre. Confirm the amount displayed for your category and selected channel before payment. A quoted headline charge may exclude another applicable component or delivery option.
Urgency should be assessed against the actual service conditions, not an agent's promise. Ask whether the required checks, photograph or biometric procedures are complete and what collection or delivery arrangement applies. Do not book a transaction that depends on the physical card solely on an unconfirmed delivery estimate.
Protect other records after a loss
If the card was in a stolen wallet, deal separately with bank cards, telephone access and any other missing items. Replacing Emirates ID does not block a debit card or recover a compromised email account. Use each organisation's official support channel.
Be cautious about unsolicited messages claiming that someone has found your card or can release a replacement for an additional payment. Check the application yourself. Never disclose your UAE Pass PIN, email password or approval code to prove that you own the missing document. Identity evidence and account credentials serve different purposes.
Track the application and respond to requests
Save the application reference and payment receipt in a private folder. ICP provides an ID Card Status service that accepts the relevant application or identity reference. An acknowledgement means the request was received, not necessarily that every verification step is complete.
If the application is returned for amendment, read the exact reason and correct that item. Repeatedly submitting an unchanged photograph or contradictory details will not resolve the issue. Where the reason is unclear, send the reference and a concise explanation through ICP's support route, without posting your full identity record publicly.
When the new card arrives
Inspect the document, confirm the personal information and record its unchanged expiry date. Follow ICP's instructions if you later find the original; do not assume both cards should remain in circulation. Tell any organisation handling a pending transaction that the replacement is available and ask whether its records need updating.
For your household, use the experience to improve storage and reminders. Keep the card accessible for legitimate use, keep private copies recoverable, and follow the digital-document storage checklist. A replacement solves the missing-card problem, while a reliable recovery routine reduces the disruption next time.
