Planning a Job Handover and Final Settlement in Abu Dhabi

A job handover and final settlement should create a clear record of what was transferred, returned and paid.

A job handover and final settlement should create a clear record of what was transferred, returned and paid. Keep operational completion separate from legal acknowledgements about money.

Prepare the handover

List active work, deadlines, authorised access arrangements and the receiving colleague. Return company equipment against a receipt. Do not copy client files or confidential data into a personal archive to prove that you worked on them.

Review the settlement

Request separate lines for outstanding wages, approved expenses, leave, notice-related amounts and end-of-service benefits where relevant. Compare dates and calculations with your records. Ask for an explanation of disputed deductions.

Confirm final working day, permit handling, residence implications and insurance end date. Keep dependants' needs visible. Retain payment evidence and read any acknowledgement before signing. If a matter remains disputed, record it accurately and use the appropriate authority rather than describing the whole settlement as resolved when it is not.

Create two separate checklists

The operational checklist explains what work and property must be transferred. The financial checklist explains what money is due and how it was calculated. Completing one does not automatically prove the other is resolved. Keep both reviewable so that a delayed expense claim does not obscure an otherwise completed equipment return.

Agree the final working date and handover recipient with the employer. If notice arrangements change, obtain confirmation in writing. This establishes the period covered by wages and gives the team a realistic deadline for transferring responsibilities. Do not base the plan only on an assumed departure date discussed informally.

Make the work transfer usable

List active projects, next actions, deadlines, contacts and unresolved decisions. Identify where authorised records are stored and who will receive ownership. Explain unusual risks or dependencies, but avoid creating a large unstructured archive that the next person cannot navigate.

Use the employer's approved systems for credentials and access changes. Do not share personal passwords or export confidential records to a personal account. Ask information technology staff how to transfer ownership securely. A short meeting with the receiving person can confirm that the notes are understood and identify missing details before access ends.

Return property against a record

List equipment, keys, cards and other issued items, including serial numbers where relevant. Record the return date and recipient and ask for acknowledgement. If an item cannot be returned immediately, agree the method and deadline. This reduces later disagreement about whether something remained outstanding.

Do not accept an unexplained financial deduction merely because property is mentioned. Request the basis, evidence and calculation, and assess it under the applicable employment framework. Operational cooperation and a right to question a deduction can coexist.

Reconcile the settlement component by component

Request a statement separating outstanding salary, approved expenses, any applicable leave amount, end-of-service arrangement, notice-related sums and deductions. Compare each line with the correct period and supporting record. Check whether some amounts were already paid separately so they are neither omitted nor counted twice.

For gratuity, identify the employee category, service history, basic-pay basis and whether an alternative scheme applies. Use the end-of-service guide for the ordinary federal private-sector example and its limitations. Government, ADGM and national pension arrangements require their own treatment.

Check payment and acknowledgement carefully

Under the relevant federal private-sector provisions, the government's official guidance states that outstanding termination entitlements must be paid within 14 days. Confirm the applicable rule and termination date rather than transferring that deadline automatically to a different regime.

Read any release, clearance or receipt before signing. A statement that all financial entitlements have been received is different from confirming that a laptop was returned. If money remains outstanding, ask for accurate wording or advice about the document's effect. Keep payment evidence and a copy of whatever you sign.

Complete administrative transitions separately

Ask which work-permit or employment-record actions the employer will handle and what confirmation you will receive. Check residence consequences with the relevant authority for your own status and dependants. Do not assume that employment clearance, residence cancellation and a new employer's approval all occur at the same moment.

Confirm health-cover end dates and any continuing claims process with the insurer or employer. Save contact details and necessary policy records before access is removed. If moving to another employer, compare actual effective dates rather than relying on an expectation that benefits transfer automatically.

A hypothetical final review

An employee returns equipment and hands over projects but notices that an approved expense is missing from the settlement. They should keep the return acknowledgement, send the claim evidence and identify the exact missing amount. The completed handover does not make the claim disappear, and the unresolved claim does not require taking confidential business records as leverage.

Where disagreement continues, preserve a focused file of contracts, dates, calculations, approvals and payments. Use the responsible employment authority's current procedure promptly. A factual record helps distinguish an arithmetic error from a legal dispute and supports an orderly conclusion without inaccurate acknowledgements.
