A remote or hybrid arrangement should describe location, attendance, equipment and performance expectations. An informal manager's promise may not provide a stable basis for choosing a home far from the workplace.

Write down the arrangement

Confirm office days, core hours, travel expectations, equipment support and how changes are agreed. Ask whether remote work is limited to the UAE or also permits work abroad. Do not assume one includes the other.

Check permissions and data rules

Ask the employer about the appropriate work arrangement, confidentiality, systems access and any regulatory requirements. Residence and foreign-location issues need their own assessment if work will be performed from another country.

Test household practicality

Check reliable internet, a workable space and the cost of required office travel. Obtain clarity on who pays equipment or connectivity costs. If the arrangement can be withdrawn, consider whether the normal commute would remain manageable before entering a long tenancy.

Define where work may be performed

Remote work can mean working from an Abu Dhabi home, another approved UAE location or another country. Those situations are not interchangeable. Ask which locations are authorised and whether approval is needed before travelling. A manager agreeing that you can work from home does not automatically authorise permanent overseas work.

For hybrid work, record office days, core availability and how attendance changes are handled. Identify the actual office or project site. A policy that allows occasional flexibility differs from a contractual arrangement on which you might base a long-distance commute or tenancy decision.

Federal private-sector rules recognise different work models, while the exact contract and permission still matter. ADGM has its own Employment Regulations 2024 and guidance, including arrangements relevant to remote employees. Do not apply the same explanation to government, ADGM and MOHRE employment without checking the framework.

Working remotely does not by itself remove work-permit, professional-licensing or residence questions. Cross-border work can also raise obligations in the country where the employee is physically located. Ask the employer to obtain appropriate advice before assuming that an Abu Dhabi contract permits working from anywhere.

Make expectations observable

Agree how work is assigned, reviewed and handed over. Record expected response times, meeting attendance and how urgent requests are handled. Output-based assessment still needs clarity about deadlines and quality. Otherwise, flexibility can turn into uncertainty about whether you are expected to be available throughout the day and evening.

Ask whether travel time, site visits or client meetings are part of the role. If hours span several time zones, discuss how schedules and leave are coordinated. A practical written arrangement helps distinguish agreed availability from informal habits that develop after joining.

Set equipment and information-security responsibilities

Confirm who supplies the computer, licensed software, access credentials and technical support. Ask how equipment is delivered, maintained and returned. If using personal equipment is proposed, clarify security requirements and whether the organisation can access or manage it. Do not assume an employee should purchase equipment before a verified arrangement is in place.

Discuss approved storage, secure connections and the handling of confidential records. A home workspace may still need privacy for customer calls or sensitive documents. Follow the employer's legitimate security process rather than moving files to personal email because it seems more convenient.

Clarify expenses and practical support

Ask which costs, if any, are reimbursed and what approval is needed. Internet, telephone, equipment and travel can be treated differently. A remote-work label does not establish a universal entitlement to a particular household allowance. Obtain the relevant policy and use actual figures when evaluating the package.

Consider whether your home supports the arrangement. Reliable connectivity, suitable space and manageable noise are practical requirements, not reasons to disclose unnecessary private details to colleagues. Remote work can save commuting time while still requiring uninterrupted availability during agreed hours.

Plan changes and temporary disruptions

Ask who can alter office attendance and how much notice is normally given under the agreement or policy. A long-term housing decision should not depend solely on a temporary accommodation made during disruption. Keep any essential arrangement documented and understand whether it is reviewable.

If connectivity fails or travel is interrupted, know the reporting process and alternative plan. Do not assume every disruption automatically converts an absence into authorised remote work. Contact the employer promptly and agree how duties, leave or another arrangement will be handled under the applicable framework.

A hypothetical arrangement review

A worker offered two home-working days chooses accommodation farther from the office. Before signing the tenancy, they should ask whether those days are contractual, policy-based or manager-approved and whether the worksite can change. This example illustrates a decision dependency, not a promise that every employer must preserve a particular pattern.

Keep the final arrangement with the contract, including approved location, hours, equipment and review terms. Revisit it when duties, residence or household circumstances change so that both parties understand how work will continue.
