Green Residence holders can apply to sponsor eligible family members, subject to the family residence conditions and each person's application. The principal applicant's five-year permission does not automatically grant five-year residence to every relative. Abu Dhabi households should check the relationship category, documentation, housing, financial evidence and the validity period actually issued.
Who the official guidance includes
The ICP Green Residence Guide confirms the ability to sponsor family in accordance with approved requirements. ICP's detailed residence issuance service describes spouses, unmarried daughters, sons under 25 and children with special needs, with Green holders also entitled to sponsor first-degree relatives.
The last provision should not be interpreted as permission to sponsor any extended-family member. Ask which relationship category applies to a parent or other relative and which current conditions accompany it. A relationship falling outside the published categories needs clarification, rather than an assumption based on the everyday meaning of family.
Children's age and marital status can affect the applicable category. Keep dates of birth and relationship details accurate, especially when a birthday falls close to the application date. Do not assume a family member qualifies under identical rules simply because another child was approved earlier.
Financial resources and suitable housing
For the family selection, the ICP service describes monthly income of at least AED 3,000 with employer-provided housing or AED 4,000 without it, together with adequate accommodation. Check the category selected in the live service because the public page combines several residence situations.
Those family conditions are different from the salary or financial test used to obtain Green Residence itself. An employee qualifying for Green Residence still needs to prepare the family evidence requested. A freelancer or investor should ask how the household resources should be demonstrated when they do not receive a conventional monthly salary.
Suitable housing is about the actual household and accommodation. A rental advertisement or an intention to find a larger flat is not the same as evidence of accommodation already secured. Ask which tenancy, ownership or utility records are required for the family application.
Relationship documents
The issuance service identifies attested marriage records for spouses, birth certificates for children and proof of kinship for parents. Prepare the correct documents for each person rather than uploading one household document indiscriminately.
Where records were issued abroad, confirm authentication and translation requirements. Names may differ across marriage, birth and passport records because of transliteration or naming conventions. Resolve those connections with properly issued evidence instead of editing scans.
For a child with special needs, ask which supporting documentation is needed for the relevant category. Do not disclose unnecessary medical details beyond what the authority requires. Keep sensitive records in the appropriate application file rather than attaching them to every family member's documents.
The sponsor's validity sets an important boundary
ICP states that family residence matches the sponsor's permission and cannot exceed it. If the principal applicant has already used part of the five-year term, a dependant should not assume they will receive a fresh five years from their own application date.
This affects budgeting and travel. Applying for a family member shortly before the sponsor's renewal can create a different practical sequence from applying soon after the Green permission is issued. Ask the authority how to coordinate the applications rather than assuming a standard term.
Move an existing household carefully
Some families already have residence through an employer or another sponsor. Before changing the principal applicant's status, establish how each dependant's permission will be handled. The sponsor's new application may not automatically update everyone else's records.
Create a table with each person's current sponsor, permission expiry, passport validity and planned next application. Include insurance and school travel dates. This is a planning tool, not an alternative to official instructions, but it makes a household transition easier to explain to the authority.
Avoid cancelling all existing permissions simply because the main applicant appears eligible for Green Residence. First confirm the approved order and lawful status covering each person during any gap.
Costs and identity procedures are per person
A family application can involve separate residence charges, Emirates ID, medical requirements where applicable, insurance and document preparation. A quotation for the principal applicant alone should not be treated as the total household cost.
Ask whether any deposits or guarantees apply to the particular relative category, and obtain the relevant official amount and refund conditions. The reviewed general pages do not justify one universal deposit figure for every Green family.
Check the residence and identity details once issued. An error in a child's name or passport number can cause difficulty later even when the principal applicant's record is correct.
Employment and later changes
Family-sponsored residence and permission to work are separate questions. A spouse should confirm the work permission required by the intended employer rather than assuming family sponsorship authorises every employment arrangement.
Review the effect of divorce, a child's change in status or the principal applicant's category change through the appropriate official service. Family residence should reflect current facts. The Green residence overview helps connect family planning with the sponsor's own conditions, costs and renewal, but the selected family service controls each dependant's application.
Keep the sponsor's category finances distinct from the household test using the salary and income explanation.
