Salary administration should make the amount, pay period and payment date clear. Ask the employer how the applicable wage-payment process works for your employment regime rather than assuming every Abu Dhabi employer uses the same arrangement.
Before the first payroll
Confirm the agreed salary breakdown, payroll cut-off, payment date and bank-account requirements. Ask how a partial first month and approved reimbursements are handled. Keep bank details private and send changes only through a verified employer process.
Review each statement
Compare basic pay, allowances, overtime or variable pay, deductions and net payment. Keep the statement and bank credit record. Ask payroll to explain an unexpected difference with the calculation and relevant approval.
If payment is delayed
Record the due date, amount and correspondence. Use the employer's query process, then the appropriate official employment channel if unresolved. Do not assume an HR explanation changes your legal rights, and do not confuse a reimbursement delay with a different wage entitlement.
Establish the applicable payment arrangement
Start with the legal employer and employment regime. The federal Wage Protection System, commonly called WPS, is not a label that should automatically be applied to every government or ADGM employee. Ask which system covers the employer and how your pay will be processed under that arrangement.
The UAE Government's current salary-payment guidance refers to Ministerial Resolution No. 340 of 2026 for MOHRE-registered establishments. It describes the first day of each Gregorian month as the due date for the preceding month's salary. Older online summaries can describe previous enforcement timetables. Check the current official guidance rather than assuming an employer has a blanket informal grace period.
Prepare for the first payroll
Ask what account or approved payment arrangement is required and how details are submitted securely. Confirm the employer's payroll cut-off and how it handles a mid-period joining date. A cut-off used for administration should not be confused with permission to ignore the applicable wage-payment obligation.
Provide accurate details through the verified payroll channel. If an account changes, obtain confirmation that the instruction has been received and take care with email requests that redirect salary to unfamiliar details. Keep enough information to trace a payment without distributing banking records to unrelated recruitment contacts.
Read a statement as a reconciliation
Match the statement to the period it covers. Identify basic wage, fixed allowances, variable earnings, reimbursements and deductions separately. A bank credit shows money received, but it may not explain the calculation. Request an itemised statement or written explanation sufficient to understand an unexpected difference.
Check whether a first payment covers a partial month and how the proration was calculated. Compare any leave adjustment or absence deduction with your own records. Do not assume a smaller payment means the contractual salary has changed, or that an expense reimbursement should be treated as part of basic wage.
Understand variable amounts
Commissions, overtime and bonuses can have different evidence and approval processes. Ask which records support the payment and when an approved amount should appear. Keep the relevant plan and calculation alongside the pay statement. A projected incentive should not be budgeted as guaranteed monthly cash before its conditions are satisfied.
If an allowance depends on actual expense or assignment, compare the applicable policy with the period worked. Ask what changed rather than accepting an unexplained label such as adjustment. For a proposed deduction, request its basis, amount and supporting record. The applicable law and facts determine whether it is permitted, not the payroll label alone.
Resolve discrepancies with precise evidence
Raise a query identifying the period, expected component, amount received and document supporting your expectation. Attach only relevant records through the employer's secure process. A focused request makes it easier to distinguish an administrative error from a disagreement about the contract.
Keep the response and promised correction date. If the issue remains unresolved, consult the responsible employment authority using its current official channel. For a MOHRE matter, use ministry guidance; for another regime, identify its procedure. Do not assume a complaint elsewhere automatically starts the correct process or stops all deadlines.
An illustrative statement check
Suppose a worker's contract lists AED 9,000 basic pay and AED 3,000 fixed allowances, while a particular month shows AED 11,500 received. These hypothetical amounts do not establish underpayment by themselves. The employee should check the pay period, any documented proration and deductions before reaching a conclusion.
If no supported adjustment explains the difference, the query should state the AED 500 discrepancy and request correction or an itemised explanation. This is more useful than comparing with a colleague whose contract or attendance record may differ.
Keep an employment payment file
Save contract variations, statements, bank confirmations, approved claims and leave records in a secure personal archive where lawfully permitted. Avoid copying confidential business data. A consistent record supports future offer comparisons, final settlement review and any legitimate wage query without relying on access to an employer account after departure.
